The company launched its new compact Rover 400 car in 1990. When developing the model, the company turned to Japanese colleagues from Honda, and the chassis of cars from this Japanese manufacturer was taken as the basis for the Rover 400.
The company decided not to endow its AW-to with a catchy appearance, mainly focusing on practicality and reliability. Rover 400 cars were produced for 15 years, and during this time the company managed to release two generations of Rover.
The first generation, called the Rover 400 1 (XW) ("Rover 400 XW"), went on sale in early 1990. The model was based on a modified Honda Concerto chassis. In terms of design, the Rover 400 XW also did not go far from the Japanese “big brother”: common features were visible in both cars.
Interestingly, the diesel engines that were installed on the model also had nothing to do with the company. They were supplied by Citroen. A little later, in order to strengthen the position in the family car market, a station wagon was also released on the basis of the Rover 400 XW. The sedan was discontinued in 1995, while the station wagon remained on sale until 1998.
In 1995, the second generation of a compact family car went on sale. The cars were named Rover 400 2 (RT). Due to low demand for the station wagon, the company decided to abandon its release, and instead, a hatchback appeared on sale along with the sedan. In the manufacture of the Rover 400 RT, the English manufacturer again bought a license from Honda. This time, the Honda Domani became the basis for the Rover 400 RT.
The dimensions of the AWto put the Rover 400 RT on a par with the Ford Escort and VW Golf, but the British decided to separate their AWto from the competition by adding a little luxury to the interior. So, the interior of the Rover 400 RT was made "under the tree" and used more expensive materials. As a result, the model significantly increased in price, and, surprisingly, found its buyer. In 1996, the Rover 400 RT ranked seventh in terms of sales in the UK. The release of the model was completed in 2005.
